This year ten students from GCAA went to the State Solo and Ensemble Contest, held at the University of Missouri on Saturday, May 2. The students were rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the highest possible score, or exemplary. Wes Smith, vocal music teacher, and Damen Martin, instrumental music teacher, who accompanied the students, were extremely proud of how well they all did. Vocalists Zachary Clawges, 10th, and Viktor Freesmeier, 11th, both took 1’s for their solos, and Jaylah Davis, 10th, violinist, also received a 1 for her performance. Alex Betts, 11th, and Mary Chamberlain, 11th, received 2’s for their solos. Mixed McCole, a vocal ensemble sextet made up of Tristessa Brown, 9th, Clawges, Sydney Hollins-Lewis, 10th, Jerell McCole, 11th, Alyssa Poss, 11th, and Heather Williford, 10th, received a 3 for their ensemble performance.

“We are so proud of the hard work these musicians have put into preparation for this all semester long!” Smith wrote after the competition commenced.
