Photography student uses social media to generate conversation around art

Isaiah Maupin is excited for students to participate in his mural project.

Many high schools have tactics to draw in their students and get them involved.  Junior photography student, Isaiah Maupin, has been looking for ways to help unite the students at GCAA.  He has embarked upon a new project that allows other students to become a part of his artwork.

   Every B day, Maupin is going to hang up a new photo around the school.  Next to the photo will be a list of questions such as. “What does this photo mean to you? How does this photo express of define our school?” or, “In one word how would you describe this photo?”  Maupin is aiming for students to take a picture of the photo he has posted and either direct message it to him on Instagram or Snapchat it to him along with a response to one of the photos.  He will take the responses he receives as a guideline for what type of picture he will post the next day.  If Maupin can get enough students to participate in this project, he plans to make a full wall mural of all of the pictures and people’s comments.

 

 When asked why Maupin wanted to undertake this project, he said, “I think this will be a good way to start sharing art forms in the school.  We don’t do a lot of photography, it’s a lot of dance and theater and stuff.  This will be a good way for students to get a feel for what other people do.”  Maupin encourages every student to participate in this project in order for it to be a success.
