Registration for New Year

The 2014-15 school year is coming to a close. Before the school year ends, students have to start figuring out what classes they want to take for the following year. It’s administration’s responsibility to ensure that all of the students have the classes they need, and also to ensure that they have enough credits to graduate. Registering can be done rather quickly, or it can take time, depending on who wants to take difficult classes that have a prerequisite, such as a signature from a teacher.

Teachers have been telling students about the registration process for a few months now. Many wondered what new classes would be offered, how to sign up for those classes, and when they’d know what classes they got put into for the new school year. Students weren’t able to start this process until the last month of school due to multiple reasons. Before the registration forms where actually handed out, many students just assumed that the teachers were behind schedule. They came to find out that it was not a GCAA faculty member’s fault.

According to High School Counselor, Erica Snelson, “Central Office was the cause of the inconvenience. Infinite Campus was also messing up a bit, but that was not the main issue. Everyone at Central Office took longer than expected for this because they had to take every course that is offered now, and every new course that’ll be offered next year, and make sure that the descriptions were finalized and tight.”

Snelson was one of the main people that knew the information about registration and how it works. Once students could begin the process, she had spoke  on why it took so long for everything to get setup, and was also willing to answer some additional questions.

Snelson has been a counselor for a little over a decade now, and with GCAA being the first school she’s worked at that wasn’t a full high school in the beginning, this registration situation was somewhat hectic for her. She’s stated that it will be most vital for her seniors of next year to take this registration seriously. They need to make sure that they have every credit in every class that they need to graduate. She also gave intel on if students will know their schedules before  school starts and how registration will work for the middle schoolers as well.

“Students will know or at least be able to see what their schedules will look like during summer break.” Snelson said.

This way there won’t be a lot of confusion during the first week of school. Also, the only middle school grade that is doing registration the same way as high school are the 8th graders.

“Eventually, all future registration will be set up like this, but for now, the 6th and 7th graders of next year will have paper handouts that they’ll fill out at home and return.” stated Snelson.

Finally, with the addition of a plethora of new classes and an entire new grade next year, new instructors are definitely needed, and some will be hired during the summer.
