Sophia Schirmer-Beiermann, junior, was accepted into Missouri Girls State, a program that focuses on female leadership, interest in government, and service to others by creating a mock where students vote for candidates and learn how government works through hands-on experience.  Located at University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, the program runs from June 25 to July 1.

Students applied for the program in February.  Applications for the program included questions about school and service to others. Accepted applicants received confirmation letters in April.

Beiermann believes she was accepted into the program for her student records and experience as a leader in Saint Louis’ Youth Leadership program, which focuses on helping to improve the city.  She applied because of her interest in government, the program’s emphasis on female leadership, and her interest in pursuing a career as a policy writer.

The program will feature Missouri politicians as speakers.  Beiermann said she is excited to hear from them, especially female legislators.

“I want to hear from more female legislators.  I think that would be really cool, because I don’t hear a lot about them,” said Beiermann.

Beiermann believes that it is important to understand how the government works because anyone can play a role in it and make changes they want to see happen. She says if she becomes a policy writer she will focus on the criminal justice system, education, public health, and the environment.

The program’s participants will be eligible for many scholarships to Missouri colleges, including University of Central Missouri, as well as 21 other colleges across the state.
