Chess Club takes on National Tournament
May 9, 2016
Over the weekend of April first through third, the chess team checked both their pieces and their competition at the National Chess Tournament in Atlanta. Seven middle and high schoolers represented GCAA. Over the three days they played a total of seven rounds, coming out 12th in the division or all high chess teams competing from around the country.
The chess team experienced new challenges during the tournament, such as playing for two hours on each side opposed to only one hour. They want to use these experiences to better prepare for their next tournament.
“It was certainly different than what we were used to. It was a new learning experience
because I played people a lot higher than me and there were referees and spectators.” said Katlyn Miller, 10th grade.
This tournament was the final event for chess season, but the club will pick
back up next semester. Next year the Super Nationals will take place in Nashville Tennessee, which is a chess tournament that happens every four years. The chess team is excited to begin preparing for this tournament when school starts back up in the fall. They want to invite any avid chess players to consider joining the team.
