Detra Johnson-McMurray (Ms. Mac), data owner and enrollment specialist
Q: What were you doing before you started working here?
A: I worked for Confluence Academy Old North, we serve grades pre-k through sixth grade. And prior to that I came from a school called Kipp.
Q: What is something that you want people to know about you?
A: I like to spread joy and humor wherever I go. Deep down inside, I really want to be this comedian, and so one day I’m going to break out and you’re going to see me on a stage doing stand up, but I’ll be sitting down.
Q: What is your long term goal for the school?
A: My long term goal here is to make an impression on students, to never give up, to know they have someone to talk to here, because I’m a mother first. Just building self esteem in students who lack self esteem, and just trying to get them to the goal of graduating, and let them know that their education shouldn’t be defined off of zip code, and I want kids to have access to education no matter where they reside.
Q: What are you looking forward to while you’re here?
A: Building relationships with students, because I believe once you start to build relationships with students, then you get them where the bond is so tight, that they trust you. And just being able to allow them to have space, maybe they don’t want to talk to their parents about certain things, and maybe they feel comfortable sharing that information with me. So just being someone that they can speak to, and confide in.
