Music Department Shows Their Talent
March 10, 2015
This past week has been eventful for the music department.
First, Camerata opened for the Webster University Chamber Choir at the Sheldon Concert Hall on Wednesday, March 4th. Then, on Friday, March 6th the vocal musicians went to the District Solo and Small Ensemble Competition.
From the results of the solo and ensemble competition, nine competitors qualified to go to state in May – four soloists and one ensemble group. The soloists include Alexandria Betts, Mary Chamberlain, Zachary Clawges, and Viktor Freesmeier. The ensemble group members are Tristessa Brown, Zachary Clawges, Sydney Hollins-Lewis, Jerell McCole, Alyssa Poss, and Heather Williford. On Monday, March 9th Camerata went to a large ensemble competition, their first contest, and scored a 1 out of 5.
Orchestra also went to a competition last week. This competition is statewide and has high schoolers that range from singing to playing a trumpet, competing against themselves, hoping to receive a 1 to move onto to state. As a result of the competition, Jaylah Davis, 10th grade, qualified to go state for her violin solo.
“I was very proud,” said Music Department Chair Damen Martin. “All of them did a fantastic job, especially students who went last year and took harder pieces and they did a really, really good job.”
