Students Plan Senior Trip to Cancun
May 14, 2015
Randy Thompson, 11th grade, along with other juniors, has begun working to make the senior year the best year yet.
“We were like you know it would be funny, let’s go to Mexico, and see how much Spanish we can get around with,” Thompson stated.
Cancun is a Mexican city with beaches that attract many young adults.
“I wanted to do this because we are the first graduating class and we have been through so much, and I feel we deserve something special to help us all bond once again,” Thompson continued.
He opened this trip to the entire senior class, and he is not the only one who sees this trip as a bonding experience.
Aveion Dancy, 11th grade, says, “I think this will be really fun because I’m sure people outside of your circle will be there, and it is another way for us to connect.”
Most students graduating in 2016 have been growing together since the day GCAA opened its doors in 2010. Thompson plans to have bonding activities such as scavenger hunts, bonfires, games on the beach, etc. He also plans to see some landmarks like El Rey Ruins and Playa Chac Mool. El Rey Ruins is known to be a historical landmark which Mayans once inhabited, while Playa Chac Mool is a restaurant that serves mexican food.
During spring break of the 2015-2016 school year, all seniors are invited to join the trip to Cancun. On this trip, students are responsible for their own funds to and from Cancun, and also for any necessities upon arrival. Thompson has already started a GoFundMe account to raise money for the trip. The link for the GoFundMe has been floating around Facebook after many students have shared the link. The money being raised is only to cover for everyone’s’ housing when there. Thompson also had in mind a few other opportunities in which he could raise money, one of which is simply asking for donations at future events the school is hosting.
Senior year is the best year for most people, and students are so excited. “It’s senior year, you have prom, it’s your last year of highschool; so I’m excited but nervous at the same time,” said Jasmyne Everett, 11th grade.
“I kind of think, honestly that it (senior year) will be lame, but if we have the right people leading us (student council) I think it will be really good, yeah I think it will be a lot different and really cool.” said Dancy.
