All aboard the Feels Train! Selma is full of cringe-worthy, tear-jerking, and rage inducing moments that make you leave the theater wondering what you would have done in that situation. With David Oyelowo as the historical hero, Martin Luther King Jr., along with Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson, and Oprah Winfrey, Selma takes on the legendary marches of 1965 and turns back the clock to put you in the shoes of many famous Civil Rights activists.
This movie did a wonderful job of portraying raw emotion and getting the audience involved in what was happening. The acting was superb, each actor really gets into their role and owns them. The brutal police scenes didn’t hold back, letting you fully experience the pain and suffering the real life activists went through.
The only thing I didn’t enjoy about Selma, was that it wasn’t very straight forward. By that I mean it was hard to understand what exactly was going on or why something was happening. I got lost many times, but eventually I caught up with what was happening later on in the movie.
I highly recommend this movie if you’re big on Civil Rights. Even if you’re not, it’s still a very moving and important film to see, as it portrays the problems and heartbreak that happened during the Civil Rights movement, as well as how strongly the activists pulled through all the hardships. If you have younger siblings or family members who don’t understand why Civil Rights was so huge and moving, drag them to the theater for this movie. They’ll thank you afterward.
