In protest of the dress code, many students came to school wearing crop tops. The dress code policy states, “Clothing that reveals cleavage, midriff or any part of your behind,” is prohibited. However, on Wednesday, September 16, walking through the halls, male and female students conduct civil disobedience, by freely showing their support for body independence. 

“We’re acting in civil disobedience,” said Lilja Michaud, 12. “We’re making an exaggerated statement in wearing short crop tops because the dress code for females is guided towards ‘not distracting boys’. Girls should have body positive feedback and not have to worry about covering themselves for the sake of others. Let her embrace her body.”

Normally students would be asked to change into something less relieving, but no student was sent to the office, asked to change or had a conversation with administration thus far. 

Instruction continued as normal. Administration believes that the students’ education is priority. 

“If a student’s dress does not distract from or disrupt the teaching/learning environment then it is not a distraction or disruption,” said Lisa Kaczmarczyk, High School Principal. 

Rebecca Irving, Dean of Students, was unavailable to give comments before press time.
