This year’s spring art show is on Thursday, April 23rd from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The middle schooler’s art will be showcased in the school lobby and both of the cafeterias. The high schooler’s art will be located in the mezzanine and the lobby of the Sun Theatre. `

The main exhibit will be called ‘Walk a Mile in Their Shoes.’ It will include pieces created by all high school art pathway students and two select middle school classes. The pieces will be painted on shoes donated by Brown Shoe Company. A selection of the shoes will be available for silent auction, and the rest of the shoes will be sold at a constant price. The money raised will benefit the art department. Each shoe depicts a prominent civil rights issue from across the world, and across the ages.

“This is my first year here, so it’s nothing like I’ve ever done before,” said Safa Caplinger, 9th grade. “It’s rather interesting because the shoe has different textures and a lot more surface to work with so drawing on that is difficult.”

Though some students are doing the same event, every student’s shoe looks different. Feminist, Native American, and LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, All) issues seem popular, but each person is representing the issues in a different way.

Also, each art teacher may present the assignment differently. For example, David Spiguzza is requiring his students to use realism. Julia Aastrom, 9th grade, was originally discouraged by this, having an original plan to do a pattern of all the LGBTQA flags, but Aastrom changed the subject to feminism, and Rosie the Riveter became the perfect choice.

The students are very hopeful that their shoes will sell, as the art department is lacking the money for many of the supplies they need. This auction has the opportunity to benefit the students greatly.
