Calm Wind, 1937

“Yoshida Hiroshi was fascinated by the effects of light, and devised color variations for a number of his designs to suggest different times of the day.”*

This print is quite similar to Sailing Boats––Night, except that the colors and lighting are a lot more bright, since it’s set during the day. The way the light hits the water in this piece is not only absolutely beautiful, but quite accurate as well. The calm waters and clear skies perfectly match the title of this piece––Calm Wind.

It’s an immersive piece, and whenever I look at it, I can’t help but feel like I’m there. I could almost hear the movement of the waves, feel the sun on my skin and the ocean spray on my face.
