BLACK STUDENT ASSOCIATION

When speaking with Sommer Harris-Nance, GCAA’s Dance teacher, we asked her what were her goals on re-opening the black student association, to which she replied with “ A lot of students were wanting to do more within the school and after last year, when we didn’t have a Black history program planned and I had to create one in a very short amount of time, I thought it was important that we have students involved this year including sponsors, so that it wouldn’t be a last minute thought.— we want to incorporate more throughout the school year and not just during black history month.”

I also asked Ms. Sommer what she was hoping to bring to the table with this association, to which she replied with, “I think it’s going to be a opportunity for our students, not just black students but any student that wants to be involved and care about what’s going on in our community to have the opportunity to express themselves to learn more about our community and learn about all the wonderful things within the black history that has gone on within st.louis and out in the areas, and even the amazing things within our schools.”

With our last question for Ms. Sommer we asked her if she had any ideas she wanted to put on the table, to which she responded with “ I do have some ideas I want to discuss with the students. I think there are a lot of volunteer opportunities that we can do within the community and I think that is important and I would love to see the Black Students Association get involved.”
